Hedging
We stock a wide range of plants suitable for hedges and screens. Ultimate size, soil and site aspect are the major factors in choosing the correct plants for your area. Containerised grown hedging can be planted all year round providing the soil is neither frozen nor waterlogged. If planting during prolonged dry periods the plants will need copious amounts of water. Bear rooted 'whips' can be planted when plants are in dormancy usually available around November and planted up to March/April. This can be a less expensive way of planting up a large area, although a bit of time and patience may be needed before the hedge looks mature. If an instant hedge is what you are looking for then this in not a problem. We stock semi mature plants ideal for this purpose.

It is always best to remember that good preparation of the site will encourage plants to establish quickly and well. Well-rotted manure, garden compost or leaf mould can all be added to help improve the ground. Some Bone meal can be added to encourage root growth or a general-purpose fertilizer such as Growmore.

Some examples of evergreen and deciduous hedging

X cupressocyparis leylandii (Conifers)
Very quick growing, available in gold and green. Tolerates a wide range of conditions.

Prunus lauroceraus (Laurel)
Fairly quick growing, large glossy leaves, tolerates shade, but requires a reasonably well-drained soil.

Taxus baccata (Yew)
Slow growing evergreen conifer grows well in shade, copes with most growing conditions but needs a reasonably well drained soil.

Ligustifolium (privet)
Semi-evergreen plant available in green, gold and variegated forms. Any garden soil will do and thrives in sun and shade.

Reasonably quick growing

Fagus sylvatica (beech)
Tolerates any soil other than heavy clay. The common beech is greened leaved; most of the golden-brown leaves are retained in the winter. The copper beech has purple foliage. Ideal for windy sites.

To create a low growing hedge consider some of the smaller evergreen berberis, lavenders, buxus (box) or hebes to name but a few.

Many shrubs and smaller and slower growing conifers are also worth considering in perhaps creating that more unique boundary.

Forsythia, Viburums, Rhodendrons, Rosa rugosa are all examples of plants that will create a less formal type hedge.
