Turf
If you are redesigning your garden or creating a new one, often the main focal point is your lawn. In order to get the perfect lawn for your garden we have selected the best mix of seed for a good looking, hard wearing weed free lawn.

We grow all the turf sold at Lymefield locally so everything we supply is to the highest possible standard. Because we cultivate our own turf it means you are not receiving turf, which may have been lifted for days and days, it will be harvested specifically for your order.

Here are a few handy hints to laying the turf:

Soil preparation
This is the most important part of laying the turf, as it will help you get a flatter well-drained lawn.

Kill of all the existing growth either with a weed killer or by turning the soil.

Once turned make sure you walk it in to compact slightly then rake lightly to produce a fine layer of soil on the top.

This is the point that you get the lawn as flat as possible as the turf will follow the same contours.

Remove any stones showing.
If you wish, you could give the area a light dusting of bone meal but it is not necessary. (It will just help encourage root growth)

Once you have established the right surface it will be time to lay the turf. You will require a flat plank and a cutting tool. Starting on the longest straight length (If you have one)

Roll out the turf from one end straight through to the other avoiding standing on it (All ways leave some spare at the ends for trimming in to shape)

Now use the plank on the section of turf you have just laid to walk on this will firm it down and avoid damaging the new turf.

When starting each row try to stagger the joints.

Once it is laid it is time to cut the turf to shape your lawn to what you want using the plank for any straight edges.
Once finished give the turf a good watering.

Now you have finished laying it, you will have to water the turf twice a day in dry conditions untill it is established. In normal conditions leave for two weeks before mowing, then start by leaving it quite long then going shorter. It is essential to water the lawn until it is fully established the best way to test this is to pull a corner of the turf up to see if it has rooted down. In order to maintain a healthy lawn the use of fertilisers is important. Please contact us and we will advise you on the correct chemicals, dosage and the time of year to use them.
