Advice On Retaining Moisture
08 August 2003
Due to the extreme heat you may be finding that your borders and containers are drying out extremely quickly. Watering is extremely important especially on newly planted areas and containers. The best times to water are in the morning or late afternoon however if your plants look like they need watering then water them whatever the time. One of the best ways of retaining moisture in pots or in the ground is by mulching. This can be done with either bark chippings or Gravel USEFUL TIP: DO NOT USE WOOD CHIP (Shredded Tree Waste) BECAUSE A LOT OF NITROGEN WILL BE DRAWN FROM YOUR SOIL TO ASSIST IN THE BREAKING DOWN OF THE WOOD CHIP.
It is important to keep deadheading all your plants whether they are annuals, perennials or shrubs. This will prolong the flowering season and allow the colours to flourish well into the autumn. Also using fertilizers will help to prolong the flowering season. At this time of the year use a liquid fertilizer as apposed to slow release feeds on your annuals. There is probably just enough time for one last summer feed on your lawn before it is time to autumn feed.
