Planting Hedges14 December 2003 If you are considering planting a hedge here are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself before you start planting. Think about why you want the hedge and what the long-term purpose is, also what effect you are trying to create. For example is it for privacy, security or simply to define a border, also are there any key features you would ideally like? e.g. evergreen, leaf colour, flowers, fruit, thorns etc. Decide how much maintenance you can manage. Some hedges will only need cutting once a year whereas others may need cutting up to three times a year. Choose a suitable plant/plants, which fit your criteria. The planting does not have to be made up of one particular species of plant, sometimes a mixture can look very effective however the growth rate may vary slightly and cause a difference in heights. (Please refer to the table). If the hedge is on a boundary of two properties, it is worth while talking to your neighbour as all sides of the hedge will require trimming and part of the hedge may only be accessible from your neighbours garden. Some plants are available bare rooted at the moment. Please enquire in the garden centre.
