Bird Care

06 January 2004

After last weeks article on feeding wild birds in your garden I thought it would be a good opportunity to follow up with a few ideas on different types of feeders, tables, nesting boxes etc and where to locate them.
Different species of birds feed in different ways, some feed clinging to feeders and some feed on the ground. The only problem with feeding on the ground is the possibility of being attacked by local cats. A bird table can be a good compromise, ‘lifting’ the ground out of reach of the cats and also providing somewhere to hang feeders from. Make sure it is out of jumping reach from places where a cat may sit.
The range of bird feeders on the market is unbelievable but it can be narrowed down by asking yourself a few questions.
Do you need a squirrel proof feeder?(If you have squirrels in your garden then it will be worth while. A persistent squirrel can easily destroy a wooden or plastic feeder).
What type of feed are you trying to put in the feeder? (There are different feeders for Peanuts, Seed or Fat products)
How much do you want to spend? (If you don’t require a squirrel proof feeder then the cost will be reduced dramatically, plastic and wooden feeders will start from a couple of pounds but expect to pay over ten pounds for a good squirrel proof feeder).
Apart from feeding, a fresh supply of drinking water is essential. Not only used for drinking but also to bathe in. Be aware that during frosty spells, shallow water can easily become frozen and some thawing may be necessary.

Now is a good time to think about buying a nest box. Even though nesting will not start until the spring, birds will be on the lookout for suitable nesting places. The correct positioning of a nesting box is important, the best direction to face the box is away from prevailing winds and direct sunlight. When the young first leave the box it is important that they have some sort on vegetation they can perch and hide amongst. The height of the box is not really very important as long as it is not in reach of any disturbance.
From everyone at Lymefield, we hope you had a good Christmas and all the very best wishes for the year ahead.
