Seed Potatoes16 January 2009 We have seed potatoes in stock now but don’t panic they don’t have to be planted just yet! There are four main groups available. First Earlies, Second Earlies, Main Crop and Salad,s. The first earlies need to be planted late March after chitting and depending on the variety ready for lifting June/July. Second Earlies need planting early-mid April after chitting and depending on the variety ready for lifting July/August. Main Crop need planting mid-late April after chitting and depending on the variety ready for lifting some in August for immediate use however ones for storing should be lifted September/ Early October. The Salad Potatoes will depend on the variety. How do I know when they are ready to harvest? As a general rule, with earlies wait until the flowers open or the buds drop. With maincrops for storage wait until the foliage has turned brown and the stems have withered. Cut off the old foliage and leave for ten days.
