Creating colour & interest in your garden
Yes, the nights are getting longer but the weather remains cold, but there are still plenty of ways to bring colour to your garden.
All of these seasonal shrubs are evergreens hardy enough to survive a tough Northern winter, and have their best moments throughout the cold months when other plants and trees are having a break. We have placed a select few online for delivery and instore we have lots more for your perusal!
Here is a selection of our best colourful seasonal plants:
Skimmias have clusters of berry-like buds (or in the case of the female variety actual berries) throughout the winter which then turn to flowers in spring time. The flowers themselves are also very fragrant. Skimmias do great in shady spots and grow to an eventual height and spread of approximately 1-1.5m.
The two common Leucothoe varieties which you will find around our area have very different leaves from one another. 'Zeblid' has uniform, flame-like leaves which change colours through autumn and winter. 'Rainbow' has variegated leaves in shades of green, pink, cream, and bronze.
There are countless varieties of Holly around and in many different forms. Holly is tough, evergreen, produces berries and also has very attractive foliage (especially the variegated types like the ones pictured above). Holly in it's simplest form comes as a shrub, but you will also find more column-like bushes and standards too. Our favourite standard is 'Golden King' its a lollipop shaped 'ball on a stem' plant. Standards are suitable for pots and placing one either side of a door or walkway looks especially effective.
There isn't much to dislike about Viburnums! The flower buds are present throughout winter, with clusters of bright white flowers appearing later on. They can get to around 5 to 6 foot if left to their own devices but can be easily maintained and kept as a tidy shrub in both the garden or a container. They will also tolerate shady sites. Avaliable for delivery online is Viburnum Tinus 'Gwenllian'
